AUTUMN TERM

English

This term is an exciting one in Year 3. English lessons will be centred around the following books: Starbird, Black Dog , The First Drawing and Leon and the Place Between.

English in Year 3 focuses less on phonics and more on spelling rules and changing words by adding prefixes and suffixes. We will be looking at developing children’s creativity and writing style through describing settings and characters while increasing use of adventurous vocabulary. We will be looking at different genres of writing in each unit so children get a chance to apply different skills.

Reading in Year 3 involves looking carefully and language choices authors make and developing our reading speed and fluency while answering comprehension questions. It’s so important that children read regularly at home to help them gain fluency and practise reading out loud. You will also receive a Reading Eggs login which contains comprehension activities to practise using the texts we read to answer questions.

Maths

Throughout the term, and following Singapore Maths, children will cover lots of different areas, starting with place value. We will then be developing use of column methods for addition and subtraction and using numbers in the hundreds. We will also be using multiplication and division facts, applying times table knowledge of the 3, 4, 6 and 8 times tables. Your child will receive a TT Rockstars login for them to practise their times tables in a fun way at home.

Science

Throughout this term, Year 3 will be studying two different Science topics. Firstly, we will look at Animals Including Humans. This is a good opportunity for children to learn about types of nutrition and how to look after their body in order to keep it healthy and happy. We will also learn about functions of a skeleton and mighty muscles. During the second half term, Year 3 will be studying rocks which links with our Stone Age History topic. As part of this topic, children will be looking at fascinating fossils and learning about the incredible findings of Mary Anning. We will be answering interesting questions like: How is a fossil formed?

Foundation Subjects

Geography lessons we will looking at the UK and learn about the features of the different countries within it as well as the physical characteristics of our landscape. We will use atlases to label the main cities of the UK and the seas that surround us.

During the second half of the term, we will be focusing on our history topic: Stone Age. This is an interesting topic where children will discover HOW to survive the Stone Age. We will answer big questions such as: how do we know about the Stone Age? What did the Stone Are period give us? We will then look, chronologically, at periods which followed the Stone Age, such as the Bronze Age and the Iron Age.

RE lessons will focus on Christianity for the first half term as we answer the question: How and Why have some people served God? During the second half term our focus will be on Sikhism, as we try to answer the question: Why are Gurus important to Sikhs?

Computing lessons for the first half term will focus on online safety; keeping safe while online is a vital skill. Year 3 will learn about the dangers of cyberbullying and how to keep themselves safe. They will also learn the importance of keeping their personal information private while online – including passwords. Another key aspect looked at will be the use of targeted advertising so that children can understand how websites use advert to promote products – do they really need to buy those products or are they being heavily influenced?

During PE this half term, children will be learning about Hockey. In particular they will be learning skills such as: passing and receiving; moving with the ball; tackling; hitting and shooting.
