Foundation Stage Class Page

Welcome to the Foundation Stage Class page. This year our Foundation Stage (Nursery and Reception) will be operating as a unit with Nursery children attending for morning only sessions. The staff will work closely with all children attending and will operate a Key Worker system. Mrs Williams is the foundation stage teacher/reception key worker, Mrs Cassidy is the nursery key worker and Miss Grace is the nursery key worker.

Nursery sessions are:

Monday – Friday – 8.45am – 11.45am

Reception sessions are:

Monday – Friday – 8.45am – 11.45am and 1.00pm-3.10pm

At Widnes Academy we follow the ‘Early Years Foundation Stage’ (EYFS) curriculum which is divided into 7 areas of learning.

Prime Areas of Learning:

· Communication and Language

· Personal, Social and Emotional Development

· Physical Development

Specific Areas of Learning:

· Literacy

· Mathematics

· Understanding of the World

· Expressive Arts and Design

Also we plan our activities to focus on the ‘Characteristics of Effective Learning’ as they help the children to develop important life skills and attitudes.

· Playing and Exploring

· Active Learning

· Creative and Thinking Critically

We plan lots of different activities through our continuous provision. We currently have a large indoor space that consists of 4 rooms.

In room 1 we have an imagination area (construction and small world) a puzzle area and a busy fingers area. (put a picture here)

In room 2, our messy-play room, we have a playdough kitchen, sand area, water area, reading area, phonics area and a creative area. (put a picture here)

In room 3, our learning base, we have a writing and phonics area, maths area, talking corner and investigation area. (put a picture here)

In room 4, we have a climbing frame, sensory den and a mark making area.

We also have an outdoor area which has a fantastic mud kitchen and building area.

As part of our foundation stage journey, we will be focusing on developing children’s play, communication, and creating a love for stories. We feel this is all a big part of your child’s early school life. Although we plan some of our topics, we will observe children and lead from their interests.

In Autumn Term our topics will be ‘Family and Friends.’ Our main texts will be ‘Peace at Last’ and ‘I am Henry Finch’ we will also be using a selection of books to support our topic. We will focus on ourselves, our families, and our friends. Focusing on the different relationships that we have in our lives and how we treat each other. We will also be exploring the different emotions that we have and why we may feel that way. We will also discuss our aspirations, thinking about what we would like to be when we grow up. As part of our topic, we will be looking at different foods we eat and how we can keep ourselves healthy.

In Autumn Term 2 we will also be looking at the topic of traditional tales. Our main texts will be ‘Little Red Riding Hood’ and ‘Little Red’ We will also look at a range of different traditional tales, talking about the similarities and differences in the tales and focusing on the characters.

In Foundation Stage, all children receive a daily phonics session. We will begin working on phase 1 and as children become secure in this, we will move into phase 2 and then phase 3.

This website has lots of free games that you can access to support your child at home.

As part of our journey, we believe it is important to create strong school/ home links. We really enjoying welcoming our adults into our setting and hopefully we will be able to resume this soon. However, until then we have lots of different activities to include you in your child’s school life.

Thank you for taking the time to read our class page and we look forward to the year ahead.
