Year 5/6

Welcome to our class page! Here you will find any information you need and details on what we are learning this term. 

• Homework will be set on Fridays and will be due in on Wednesday. 
• Reading books will be changed and sent home every Monday. We expect children to read this at least twice a week and for their reading record to be signed. They also have access to reading eggs if they wish to read more. 
• We will be going swimming this half term on Mondays starting on the 6th September.

Autumn Term 
In History and Geography this term, we will be learning about WW2. During this topic children will create timelines for build-up/outbreak of the war as well as the events of war. We will look at maps to identify Allies and Axis countries. We'll learn about Evacuees and rationing. We will also learn about the role women played during this time in history. Additionally, we are going to be looking back to see what West Bank and Widnes were like during the time of WW2. We are going to reading a book called Anne Frank by Josephine Poole which teaches all about Anne Frank and her family's journey during the time of the Holocaust.
As well as this book, we will also study a book called Hidden Figures which is about the four powerful black women, who were integral parts of NASA during the space race, but their stories were hidden for years. 
We will also read and learn from two books called 'The Rabbits' and 'The Arrival' which are both themed around colonisation, immigration and refugees. Our PHSE work will also link to these themes. 
In our Design and Technology lesson, we will be building air-raid shelter models. Children will devise a test to see which materials will make a strong structure. They will then design, make and evaluate their shelters. 
In Science, our first topic is Evolution and Inheritance. Children will learn about how living things have inherited characteristics and how they adapt to suit their environment. They will learning about Charles Darwin's Theory of Evolution and the evidence he found on the Galapagos Islands. They will also learn about the fossilisation process and how fossils are used as evidence for evolution. Our second topic is Electricity. We will study the history of electricity. Children will learn about how circuits work by converting pictures of circuits into physical circuits and vice versa. They will devise and conduct investigations to determine how to create effective circuits and which elements can be affected by others e.g. how will the voltage effect the other components e.g. bulb/buzzer in the circuit?
