Art and Design

Through art and design we want to celebrate the uniqueness of our local area, for example taking our sketchbooks down to the prom to sketch what we can see. Staff are also encouraged to focus on local artists to encourage the children to be aspirational. Through our programme of study, we hope to ensure that art and design is seen as valuable as other subjects in developing the whole child and therefore through offering a broad and balanced curriculum we are allowing as many children as possible to achieve good outcomes in a wider range of subjects. When planning art activities staff area encouraged to seek opportunities to develop children’s language skills. This alongside the progression of skills allows pupils to build upon what they know and what they are familiar with, Staff are also encouraged to ensure metacognition strategies are planned for within art and design sessions to ensure that children are happy, confident and independent learners. The use of questioning is encouraged within each year group to help embed a deeper understanding of skills and concepts.

At Widnes Academy, we value Art and Design as an important part of the children’s entitlement to a broad and balanced curriculum. Art and Design provides the children with the opportunities to develop and extend skills and an opportunity to express their individual interests, thought and ideas. We aim to inspire pupils and develop their confidence to experiment and invent their own works of art. It is our aim that our Art and Design curriculum is inclusive and nurtures the talents of all children. During the children’s Art and Design journey within Widnes Academy the children will be exposed to a wide range of artists, sculptures and craft makers.

Aims

The national curriculum for art and design aims to ensure that all pupils:

  1. produce creative work, exploring their ideas and recording their experiences
  2. become proficient in drawing, painting, sculpture and other art, craft and design techniques
  3. evaluate and analyse creative works using the language of art, craft and design

Out art and design scheme of work supports pupils to meet the National curriculum end of key stage attainment targets.
