This year we are a mixed-age class of Year 1 and 2 children. We’ll be pitching the work at the level the children need to progress so for the children this situation will not affect their day-to-day experience. Year 1 children will return to their Y1 peers for Maths and Science lessons as these are not taught as mixed subjects in our school.
In the Autumn, we are building up our independence skills and getting used to a more challenging curriculum and school day. We’ll be focusing on our routines and basic skills for Maths and English.
PE this half term is on a Tuesday and Wednesday and we will be doing Dance and Gymnastics.
Our English involves some fantastic books this term. We’ll be diving into…
Lights on Cotton Rock, Great Fire of London, A Walk in London and the Polar Express (just in time for Christmas). These will form the basis for our English lessons and inspiration for lots of lovely writing. We’ll also have separate reading sessions to keep up our strong focus on becoming fluent and confident readers. Within all these lessons, children will receive learning appropriate to their age and stage in their learning journey.
Phonics sessions are streamed across KS1 into different phonics phases to suit each child’s need. We follow Bug Club Phonics
In Maths, we follow a Maths No Problem scheme. The topics Y2 will be covering are
Ch1 Numbers to 100; Ch 2 Addition and Subtraction; Ch 7 Temperature, Ch 3 Multiplication of 2,5,10; Ch 4 Multiplication and Division of 2,5,10 andCh 11 2D shapes.
Year 1 children will return to Mrs Williams for Maths lessons in order to receive the curriculum along with their Y1 peers.
Geography this half term looks at the theme “Where I am?” with children learning about features of a place and developing mapping and fieldwork skills.
Later, We’ll be learning about a History topic of how schools were different in the past and having a look at some of the features of our own school which has been standing since the Victorian times!
In Science Y2 are covering Biology – Living things and their habitats and animals including humans. We’ll be looking at what makes a suitable habitat, things living things need and life cycles.
We’ll get in touch with our creative sides in Art and DT this term – looking at how to design a replacement chair for poor baby bear after Goldilocks destroyed his in DT and focussing on drawing skills for Art.
Our PSHE topics are Awe and Wonder where we’ll discuss how to appreciate the world around us and taking the time to find enjoyment in the things around us. Later in the term, we’ll be looking at the effect social media is having on our lives.
Please support your child at home in their learning journey with short, sharp reading bursts every day; sharing stories for fun as often as you can and talking to them about their learning in school 😊 We look forward to working with you this year.
In the Year 1/2 classroom we have a Calm corner. This is a comfortable place for children to go when they need to take a few minutes of time to themselves. Children can practice controlled breathing and relax.
