Welcome to Year 1’s class page!
Hi, my name is Mrs Williams and I am the Year 1 class teacher.
In Year 1 we have lots of fun and learn lots of new things. In the Autumn term we use Rainbow Challenge to help us learn in our play and ‘help our brains to grow.’ This supports the transition from Foundation Stage to Key Stage, using play to develop children’s skills. Children are encouraged to develop their independence skills whilst working on their own to complete these challenges and make a full rainbow!
This half term we have been learning about the book ‘So Much’ by Trish Cooke.
The children will take part in role play activities to learn the story and create mini ‘So Much’ books at the end of our writing sequence.
We then look at the book ‘Cave Baby’ by Julia Donaldson. We learn all about Cave Baby and learn to sequence the story to help us create our story books at the end of the writing sequence.
Phonics sessions are streamed across KS1 into different phonics phases to suit each child’s need. We follow Bug Club Phonics.
In Maths, we follow a Maths No Problem scheme.
The topics Y1 will be covering this term will be: Numbers to 10, Number bonds, Addition within 10, subtraction within 10, Positions and Numbers to 20.
During our science sessions we have been learning about animals including humans, focusing on the human body and our senses. Later, we do ‘Seasonal Changes’ focusing on Autumn.
As part of our history we have looked at pictures of when we were little and made a timeline of our life.
Geography this half term looks at the theme “Where I am?” with children learning about features of a place and developing mapping and fieldwork skills.
Our PE this half term is all about running, and how we can use running to help us in sports. As well as learning about wide and narrow elements of gymnastics.
During Art and DT lessons, we will get in touch with our creative sides looking at: Art – Drawing: Making your mark and Art: Painting and mixed media: Colour Splash. DT – Puppets – Christmas themed.
During RE, we will be learning about the topics and questions, Christianity (God) Does it matter how we treat the world? Then, Christianity (Jesus) Why do Christians say that Jesus is the light of the world?
In PSHE we will be learning about awe and wonder as part of our ThoughtBox curriculum.
Thank you for visiting our class page and please visit back to see all the other exciting things we will be learning about. Mrs Williams
