Widnes Academy have chosen to offer the Modern Foreign Languages curriculum to our children through teaching French.
We want our children to leave Widnes Academy with the skills and confidence to enhance their understanding of another language and take their place in the world with an awareness of and respect for other cultures.
We have chosen to deliver our curriculum through the Primary Languages Network online scheme which is fully compliant with the National Curriculum and systematically covers the key language learning skills of Speaking, Listening, Reading, Writing and Grammar.
Through our work with the British Council we are planning to develop our teachers' skills in speaking and teaching French and have made contact with a school in Toulouse. It is hoped that this will begin to deepen our pupils understanding of French culture and education.
Intent
We aim to achieve high quality language learningthrough engaging, weekly language lessons and curriculum enrichment days. Using the Primary Languages Network, lessons are progressive and varied whilst fulfilling the requirements of the National Curriculum
Implementation
Using Primary Language Network, French lessons are progressive and varied with lots of opportunity for learning French songs in EYFS and KS1 whilst reading, writing and grammar are a focus in KS2. Basic French knowledge and skills are repeated and consolidated throughout the year and regular assessments take place through mini quizzes to ensure understanding.
Impact
Children will become aware that a language has a structure, and that the structure differs from one language to another.
Children will develop their language through development of the four key skills of speaking, listening, reading and writing.
Children will enrich their language learning by developing an understanding of the French culture.
EYFS
Children are introduced to basic vocabulary through fun songs which are repeated in order to embed and create sticky knowledge to build upon during KS1.
Begin to develop an awareness of listening to and replicating the sounds of a new language. Join in with songs and games. Begin to investigate and appreciate similarities and differences of other cultures and their celebrations
